Orpheus Somehow, Somehow, Orpheus had survived his first encounter with the intimidating monarch of these lands, and had come out ahead for it.
As it turned out, the waterfall that had so captivated him held secrets he hadn't predicted. Gravity-propelled water, apparently, was excellent at visually obscuring things like entrances of cave systems.
Orpheus's approach was tentative: it was a dangerous-looking path, slick with the water, and deafening with the roar of the waterfall. Walking behind the sheet of falling water was both terrifying and exhilarating: for a moment, he felt like he were directly subverting the laws of nature, walking where no horse was ever meant to.
What he found on the other side was nearly as exciting.
The rumors, apparently, were that this place had been a grave-yard. the first several yards and side-caverns were clear, but as Orpheus stepped further into the tunnels, he confirmed those rumors: bones of all kind, arranged in different ways. Some were laid out as if they were stored there with great reverence, and others were strewn about, as if thrown without care.
It certainly explained the whiffs of smell he caught upon entering the caves, but that smell had never bothered him.
No, not at all.
This place was perfect.
He bent down to sniff one of the smaller corpses-- a carefully arranged pile of brightly-colored feathers, and breathed into it gently. It shuddered, and then got to it's feet for the briefest of seconds, as if held up by invisible puppetstrings, before falling back into a prone mass.
Oh yes. This place was perfect.
