Scarlettae
It was said that Kelpies had a way of finding livable water, some second or third sense that attracted them to the lakes and oceans they enjoyed inhabiting and hunting from. In Scarlettae's case, this may have been true.
The female was in a foul mood, and had been largely since she'd gone and left her herd of birth, though for different reasons. Days afterwards, she'd been angry and frustrated and boiling over with the results of the fight that had caused her to leave a few months earlier then was normal for her original herd. Those roiling emotions had gradually shifted to a general sort of situation-hate: she didn't have enough food, or a pool to soak her coarse, seal-like fur in, and it was uncomfortable and frustrating.
Thankfully, the old herd adage she had grown up hearing-- 'trust your claws, they can lead you to water'-- proved to be true. Quite unaware of the borders she was about to cross, Scarlettae felt anger shift towards excitement, as she noted two changes in the air upon crossing into the land called Glacio Borealis: it smelled like water, and the lush grand was growing softer underfoot.
It didn't take her long to come to the shore of a great lake, which turned the excitement to thrill: the reality of the situation (that this lake might be owned, that it wasn't simply somewhere she could roll in without consequence) did not occur to her; she was more pleased with the place simply existing.
Wading into the water up to her knees, she dipped her nose beneath the waves and found a rock in the lake bed, flipping it over to search for crayfish. It didn't take too long to find a small crawdad, and she brought it out of the water, her nose dripping mud and lakewater as she gnawed upon the creature, enjoying the flavor of freshwater shellfish: it had been too long.
OOC| Two thoughts. Due to some of the formality, I'm not too sure that Scar is going to work out here too well-- she doesn't like calling people sir or ma'am or holding her tongue. BUT if she gets forcibly kicked out, I am okay with that-- chaaaaaaracter deveeeelopment.
Name: Scarlettae Gender: Female Bio: Scarlettae Rank Wanted: Not so much wanted as this is what's available to her- Haeda Why should you get it?: because she's canonically 2, rather then 3.

Kalipso Borealis
- - -
The Lady of Glacio Borealis was out in the ocean maintaining her duties. Actually, "maintaining duties" would probably be too nice to say... What she was really doing was swimming in the ocean, chasing after a school freshwater dolphins. She wasn't hunting them, she was simply having a race to see who was faster. Currently the kelpie was winning and when they turned around near the shore she gave a victory breach. That was when she saw the other water-horse on the shoreline. Her view was brief as within moments she was back in the water with a splash. The dolphins swam away forgotten, as it was time for her to resume her ruling duties.
Now she poked her head out of the water as she swam closer, getting a good view of the creature. Even though this kelpie was made different than the ones back where she lived she could tell that this was a young horse. Possibly discontented and looking for a new home? Hopefully so. The dark green hoofs with their fins touched the shallow ground on the shore as she pulled herself out of the water. Kalipso stood to her full height as she looked kindly on the younger horse that was helping herself to the underwater delicacies. The Lady didn't mind though, there was plenty to go around so there was no need for stinginess. So, she gave a polite bow of her head in greeting before speaking, "Greetings, friend, I see you are enjoying some of the best food this land has to offer."
Regal and formal, perhaps that was how she should keep it. Or would it be better to behave more as a close friend? Well, she'd find out soon enough. The kelpie stepped forward slightly and watched with only slightly forced curiosity, the other dig for crawdads. "Might I inquire your reasoning for being here? I do not mind you eating, you see, I am just curious if you have come to join Glacio Borealis. I am the ruler, Lady Kalipso Borealis, so it is my duty to see about such things." Her trilling, singsong voice was friendly as she tried to convey the role of kind queen. ((I don't image Kali would kick her out because of that --unless she's being blatantly disrespectful and rude 24/7-- more likely they'll just butt heads a lot. Also, she can have another rank. I lowered the age to two.)) [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Scarlettae
If Scarlettae had been expecting the company of another horse-- which she wasn't, as she wasn't particularly given to think ahead, especially not in this situation-- she would've been expecting that company to come from the ground, not from the water. Hers was the only herd of kelpies that she knew of in her land of origin, and she didn't particularly think it would be all that different anywhere else; land-dwellers were more common then those who made their home among the other elements.
Thus, the equine head that proceeded to lift itself from the water and address her came as a total surprise. Scarlettae resisted the urge to drop her half-eaten crawdad, but only just, and only by swallowing down the rest of it whole.
What was more surprising was the friendly-but-formal tone that Scarlettae was being addressed in. It made her put her ears back, but the expression on her long face was more one of confusion rather then anger. Formality didn't ring well with her, but a combination of youth and inexperience and the strangeness of this situation made her uncertain of how to proceed.
Scarlettae decided to go with simple. "Er." she said, and glanced around her. "Glacio Borealis?" It belatedly occurred to her that the sea-horse must've been referring to the land, and that this must've been an owned herdland. Oh. Well, shit. That meant she was trespassing. "Er, well. I don't really have much of a reason for being here other then having decided to stop here." She paused for an awkward tic, trying to think of some reason tha made sense. "It's a nice lake?"
That didn't help. She thrashed her wavy, tied tail behind her, and perked her ears forward. Joining. Well. Joining meant she could probably have more of these crawdads. And they were good crawdads. She directed her red eyes to where she'd found the first one, and then to Kalipso. "I suppose I could join."
OOC| <3 <3 I was fine with haeda! Buuut in that case, either Battalia or Curiosa. Battalia because it's default and she'd be good at it, curiosa because she's hte last person I'd expect to be a spy.

Kalipso Borealis

The filly seemed confused about the land and her earlier words. So, the kelpie had just wandered onto her land by chance, well, that was fine too she supposed. Those that came by accident could still be persuaded to join and the fill the ranks. Perhaps later on when her herd was more well-known she'd get horses looking to join.
Kalipso nodded her head politely at the compliment... or what she thought was a compliment. "Why thank-you. I suppose it is a nice lake."
Now the other horse seemed to be thinking and finally she answered with an affirmative. Seemed as if she'd have her first member! The regal kelpie resisted the urge to rear up and neigh like a foal that just received its first toy and instead settled for a welcoming smile. Though an excited glow remained in her lavender eyes. "That is great! I am glad to have you here Miss...." Her voice trailed off as she expected a name in return. ((I know but some other people may not want their two-year-olds in Haeda, plus I was kinda thinking about how big cats mature at 3 lol. I'll put her in the Battalia then :3)) [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Scarlettae
The formal line of questioning seemed to cease, and that made Scarlettae much more comfortable. Turning her long ears forward, she still watched Kalipso as if the water-going horse were the strangest equine she had ever seen-- but more for behavior then for anything else. Most kings in her experience kicked out outsiders.. but then, well, that wasn't always true of wandering strangers, and anyway Kalipso seemed nice. She had let scar help herself to the crawdads, after all. That was something.
In general, subtly and Scarlettae got on very weakly: she tended not to notice. Thus, when Kalipso prompted Scar's name with a long pause after a sentence, Scarlettae merely stood at her and blinked, waiting for her to finish her thought. Only once an actual minute had passed, and Scarlettae had reassessed the statement, did she realize that Kalipso was politely asking for her name. "Oh. The name's Scarlettae. Of the-"
she hadn't been wandering long, and so where she was tempted to introduce her herd name, she had to pause and remember that she was no longer one of them. She was, apparently, one of this herd now. "Well, I guess now I'm of Glacio Borealis."
It rolled off the tongue, which was a good sign. so was the verdant surroundings and plentiful food, and the fact that this water-going leader did not chase her off for not bowing and offered her some of the plentiful food. Fantastic.
That brought Scarlettae back to the topic of the lake, and she took a step further into it, eying it curiously. Now that it was going to be her home, this became much more interesting to her. "So how deep is this lake?"
It had to be fairly deep, for this sea-horse to live in it. Scarlettae hadn't even known that Kalipso was there before she'd broken the lake's surface.
OOC| Wewt! Strait to the battlin', then! thanks. <3

Kalipso Borealis

For a moment the kelpie waited for a reply that would give the other's name. However, as seconds turned to minutes she began to wonder if this clawed-seahorse has heard her. After all it was a fact that her voice wasn't the loudest in the world. The most melodious, perhaps, but not the loudest. So, just when she was about to pose the question in a more direct way the kelpie spoke her name. Scarlettae. Well, it was different than what she was used to but it wasn't a bad name.
A smile came onto her face as the other kelpie slid right into naming the new herd as her own. It made Kalipso's heart fill with pride because the herd was something she had created. If only her father could see her now! She'd rub his stupid face in it. Actually, she'd rub her stupid brother's face in it too! Outwardly she just kept the friendly smile and spoke in her trilling voice, "It is nice to meet you, Miss Scarlettae. Welcome to Glacio Borealis!"
She wondered if she should show her around or let her discover the places on her own but when Scarlettae edged closer to the water she knew the answer. "It is deep enough. I even like to think of it as an ocean of sorts, myself." Lavender eyes peered keenly at the new member as she too stepped forward. "Come, I will show you around. There is plenty more food under the water that I am sure you will like." With that she trotted forward into the waves until the water covered her entire body, whereupon she kicked her powerful tail and powered down into the water. She was expecting the other kelpie to follow and thus didn't look back until she'd reached the first stop which was the underwater caves; the mouth of her own cave yawned wider than all the others. "This is where most of the herd members will sleep, including you. Oh! Speaking of being a member I have not given you a rank yet." She studied the youthful but strong and capable form of the other kelpie before speaking again. "How does being the first Battalia, or army, member sound to you?" [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Scarlettae
Scarlettae was happy enough to be welcomed-- it felt good to belong. She hadn't realized how much she'd missed it, under the self-righteous anger that had spurred her to leave. Now she had been a member of this herd for only minutes, and it felt right.
Hopefully it would stay that way.
Scarl didn't have time to respond, before the other kelpie was ducking beneath the surface of the water and heading below. Nothing to do but to follow! Scarlettae ran the distance until the water was deep enough to swim in, and then-- with fins fanned out around her claw-hooves, she pushed her way further into the water. This felt natural: going further into the heart of the earth through water, with her bound mane and tail bobbing behind her.
The heart of the earth metaphor proved to be more true then Scarl had thought, because soon they were in front of large yawning openings at the cave's floor. "Caves!" Scarl exclaimed, voice distorted through the water. "This lake is full of surprises." And Kalipso hadn't been lying: they had passed many sorts of fish on the way down, some of which Scarlettae had never eaten before. She couldn't wait to sample all of it. This was a situation which called for thanks, but Scarlettae wasn't sure exactly how to word that, and for once she wasn't rude enough to let it pass uncommented on. "Er. um. Thanks for so honoring me, I guess?" the formality was as unfamiliar on her tongue as those fishes were, but less pleasant. "Do I get any of them, or do you assign?"
Being placed immediately in Battalia may not have gone off well for every horse, but Scarl was thrilled. It made her straiten with pride, tread the water with confidence. Had the leader of this herd recognized her powerful capacity so shortly, and known she was an excellent battle horse (so far as she'd experienced thusfar, anyway)? "I am honored to be in your army!" She answered, and this time the formality didn't present a problem, as happy as she was with her placement.

Kalipso Borealis
- - -
Kalipso was glad that the other mare seemed so excited about the underwater world. The schools of colorful fishes, the caves, and she hadn't even seen all the different types of freshwater seaweed --if she even liked seaweed-- or the other crustaceans. This place was a paradise to any kelpie, in her opinion, and even the land-horses didn't have it bad off with the variety of plants and the cliffside cave.
She gave a friendly glance to the younger horse, her manners could use some work but so long as she wasn't intentionally being an ass she didn't care. "Indeed. I very was lucky to find this place."
When the other asked the question about the cave-assignments Kalipso looked back at the caves. "No, I do not assign them. Feel free to pick the one that you like the best, mind you, the large one in the middle is mine." Kali's eyes found a nice patch of special, blue freshwater seaweed and swam lower to examine it. Or maybe examine isn't the correct word... She swam lower to grab a mouthful but not before she said, "You can have a look around them if you want but I am just going to stop and have a bite of seaweed. Also, help yourself to any food if you want, Miss Scarlettae." Now she grabbed a mouthful of blue seaweed and began chewing. It had actually been a while since she'd filled up her belly last.
