Melusine.
There were a few things Melusine had learned about the coastline, but only one of them were what drew her back here like a moth to fire: the wind.
With nothing but the cliffs themselves to block the wind, it whistled over the ocean with more force then almost anywhere else that she had seen in this great land, with a heady rush of freedom she couldn't help but appreciate. It made her jealous, really: she would never know such freedom, even though it was, theoretically, her birthright.
She stood at the top of one of Cervica's wide cliffs, flightless insect wings splayed out to catch the air, eyes half closed, enjoying the privacy of the moment and the company of only the ocean wind whistling around her. It was moments like this that she could pretend, indulge thoughts she hadn't admitted since being a filly, that she could fly, and perhaps imagine what it might be like to control the air as no normal horse ever could, and all pegasus theoretically should.
Fate could be a cruel bastard, sometimes.

Kalipso Borealis
- - -
The waves of saltwater washed around the equine form that swam surely through its depths. The fish-like tail wove back and forth in a swift rhythm while the four finned-legs moved in a running motion like the horses of the land. It was a strange way to swim but it was the type of swimming that those form her clan, the Borealis Clan, had done. Besides, would it not be strange enough to see a horse of the water?
The blue and green creature had been swimming for what seemed like ages and now her lungs burned for the life-giving air above her. The equine may have been a denizen of the water but she still had to breath air just like any other horse, her body was adapted to the watery life but her lungs had remained stubbornly dependent on the same oxygen that her land-going cousins had to use. So, she angled up towards the beach she knew was there and finally her head made an appearance above the water. The purple eyes gazed around, slightly unfocused, as she tried to gauge if anything new had happened while she was under. At first there was nothing worthy to be noted but at last her eyes landed upon an equine shape up on one of the cliffs. She sent off a few clicks of echolocation to be sure and when the image bounced back in her head it was indeed another horse. Not a seahorse --the strange wings on the creature's back confirmed that-- but the type of horse did not matter.
The horse of the sea dove back underwater for a moment before resurfacing in a spot further to the left. She blinked up at the horse before moving forward to walk up onto the beach and out of the surf. Her heavy tail dragged in the sand as she began to make her way up to the cliff where the horse, a mare she could now tell, was standing. Giving a polite bow she addressed the female in her soft, singsong voice, "Good evening, friend. I hope I am not disturbing you but it has been a while since I've had the pleasure of talking to another horse."
Indeed, the seahorse had been traveling alone for a while every since she'd abandoned her father's herd so even the company of a horse that was unlike her was welcome. [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

Melusine.
Melusine's singular ruminations would not continue long, but where she might ordinarily notice another horse sneaking up on her, Kalipso went unnoticed until she spoke. This was partially because Melusine was lost, eyes half closed as she felt the wind through her mane and wings, in her own mind, and partially because she simply didn't expect another equine presence to come from the ocean. From the beach, or behind her? Certainly that made sense, but what could survive below the waves?
Clearly, some kind of horse could. She jerked her head towards the source of the noise, a look of automatic disapproval turning, for a moment, to disbelief. What? She'd never even heard of horses who were adapted for the ocean! But, the logical part of her mind whispered, it made sense: clearly the herd of her birth was adapted for the air, so would it not be logical that other equines might be suited to life in the other elements?
A life she should be sharing, she thought bitterly, but pushed it away. Jealousy over flying was a normal thing, to her, and she did not like to dwell on it.
Instead she pushed down the mingled curiosity and attempted to wear her normally fierce facade, while picking her way closer to the ocean's shore to get a better look at this stranger. "It has been awhile since I have had equine company too," she admitted, sounding curious but distant. "And certainly I have never had the.. pleasure of dealing with a horse who lived in the Ocean." she seemed uncertain here, as if she wasn't used to the niceties of conversation-- and, indeed, she wasn't. She spent far more time scorning strangers then interacting with them. "Er. How is your evening going?"

The sharp turn from the other mare was noted as was the look of disapproval which turned to... disbelief? Were those of her species so rare that it elicited surprise in everyday horses? A shame, it was, it was even more disheartening as she thought of her future goal of creating a herd for water-horses and regular horses alike.
The disbelief was not registered long on the others face it was quickly replaced by a fiercer expression. It did not intimidate Kalipso and she simply put on a friendly smile as she listened to the other's words, nodding in agreement with her statement and give a soft trill of laughter at the second. The wait was not long as the winged mare spoke in an uncertain manner about her species and the evening. The evening, as she was just starting to notice, was a bit warm with the sun beating down and evaporating the water in her skin and fur. The fins laid down on her body becoming, for the most part, invisible. "It has been very good, thank-you. Swimming is quite invigorating, though the evening sun can also be..."
She searched for a word that was a little less bad than "abhorrent" or "annoying". "Quaint. Yes, very quaint." That was a nice word, not too bad but not implying too much goodness either. Now Kalipso studied the mare before her, the dark pelt with light markings and insect-like wings. The mare before her was pretty in her own right and the all the more strange to the sea-going mare. "And to be fair, I have never had the pleasure of dealing with a Pegasus. Though I have heard of you all from the Songs of the Sea." She was actually quite excited to be seeing a Pegasus, even one with strange wings like hers. It was fascinating. Melusine.
Quaint was an odd choice of adjective, sufficiently so to momentarily knock Melusine from her awkwardness. "Does the evening sun bother you?" she asked, somewhat curiously, and couldn't keep that curiosity from infecting her expression. She had once heard, in passing, that seals and other sea-life had sufficient adaptations to bear the coldness of the sea, and she wondered if this horse shared those adaptations. Perhaps the sun was too much, when one's own body kept one warm. She always found the sun to be quite nice, but she had the thin build of a creature meant to live one's life above the ground, where the sun was warmest.
Turning her nose to that sun, she sniffed the air and then looked back to Kalipso, her mouth quirked upwards in a half-smile. "I wouldn't worry about it; for as clear as the sky looks now, there's a storm coming. I can smell it on the air." The method wasn't always fool-proof, but Melusine was right as often as not, and it certainly smelled like there would be rain before too long. She wondered if that presented a problem to this water-going mare below: storms churned the sea-waters.
Mentioning Pegasi brought a frown to Melusine's face-- a much more normal expression for her. Her tone was somewhat bitter as she answered, "It's not much of a pleasure, at least if you live amongst them." she shrugged and added, "But I suppose I am not much of a Pegasus." Perhaps they were better company to those whom they knew could never fly, rather then those they expected could and found their expectations to be wrong. Or perhaps it was simply the culture of her birth herd; regardless, in Melusine's opinion, their brains were as feathered as their wings were.

Kalipso nodded at the mare's words as she asked about the sun. "It does. The sun dries out my skin and eyes, it can get very uncomfortable, to say the least."
For the moment her eyes were fine though too much time would make her vision slowly fade away until everything was nothing but a blur. That was never any fun. She wondered what it was like to be able to completely live on land, to have normal skin and eyes that were adapted to the hot sun and not the underwater currents. It must be horrible. The kelpie couldn't imagine not being able to swim at her leisure. "A storm, you say?" Her own face lifted to the sky as she sniffed the air. Indeed there was the scent of rain and her water-adapted fur seemed to quiver with the promise of rain. "I believe you are correct. A storm will be wonderful. Nice strong waves to surf and when it rains I can stay here on land as long as I want." Storms were indeed something that she enjoyed immensely. Her great swimming skills allowed her to navigate the dangerous waters with ease and the difficult waves were always fun to swim in. Her parents had always hated how she surfed the waves, perhaps that was why she became so partial to it. Her lavender eyes lowered back to the mare before her and surprisingly she found a frown on her face. What had she said? Had the pegasi comment offended her? What she had said was meant to be a compliment, not something to give offense. Perhaps it would have been better to leave the subject to something else but now Kalipso's curiosity was tapped. "Why do you say these things? You seem like a pegasus to me, you have wings. In fact, you seem like a nice pegasus." Hopefully her words wouldn't bring on anger but maybe they would.
