Chemical war had broken out all across the world. Mutation and disease were rife and soon nothing would be left. A small group of scientists decided to build an ark, to save life, and send it through to a simulated universe, that they had built with a large and complex computer. On it they put all kinds of animals, amongst them, where a small harem of wild horses, who had been shipped into the lab under the pretence that they were to be tested for mutation. That was a thousand years ago.
With the sounds of screaming and despair behind them, the animals entered the ark, a large metal room, and stood within, frightened and confused. Suddenly the lights buzzed out. Baby animals began crying, and other animals stomped nervously. A series of explosions suddenly detonated outside, causing absolute chaos within the ark. Then suddenly silence. There was a small buzz in the air that grew louder and louder until it became deafening. Suddenly the walls caved in around them and they found themselves blinking in the sunlight of a large, sunny plain.
It wasn’t long before they got used to it. The land was bountiful and spectacular, and soon each kind of animal founded herds and families. There was an abundance of horses, but the other animals included canines, cats, deer, birds, and some reptiles. As the animals got bolder and bolder and began exploring however, they discovered something that the scientists had overlooked. The simulated world had begun to create creatures for itself. Fast evolving, strange, colourful creatures. Some were dangerous, others found peace with the earth animals. Another species of equidae also inhabited this place. Sharp fanged, feather fringed, and with extremely volatile genetics. The other horses were curious yet hesitant about the others, but eventually the species bonded to form their own unique kind of horse.
The system that simulated the world was smart. And after the scientists were killed, the large computer ran on its own, even gaining a sort of sentience, but maybe sapience is a more appropriate word. Inside the animals formed societies, ways of life, and even speech, and intelligence. Alliances were formed between species, and even towns built. A new world, with only humans missing.
